How to survive in Kure

Welcome to Kure City, a city of port.  We have a very long history in our town.

A Little History of Kure
Since we have flourished a port city, many foreigners visited our town.  Also, Kure was famous for navy base during the war time.  As you may have heard before, Battleship Yamato was build in Kure.  (Click Yamato Museum for more details.)

During the post war era, with our experience in ship production, we became famous for cargo ship production.  In Kure Bay, you see many factories producing a ship as well as metal.  Also, Kure has one of the largest self defense forces and relatively small US navy base, which is another hint of war era.

Master the basic Japanese

Regardless of how long you stay in Kure, the first key step to survive in Kure is to learn some of basic Japanese.  Kure City is a small city with a population of 200,000.  Not many people in Kure can speak and understand English.  Here comes some basic Japanese words that help you to survive in Kure or you most likely encounter while traveling in the city.

This is "Kure Shi" or Kure City.
"JR Kure Eki" or JR Kure Station.  "JR" stands for "Japan Rail".  "Eki" means station.
"Hon-dori", as in our address: "Kure-shi Hondori 4-5-6".  "Hondori" is a name of section or district in Kure City.  It literally means "Main Street"; more on "Absolute Nakadori Convenience".
"Naka-Dori" is also name of section or district in Kure City.  This place is famous as a shopping district.  Check out our "Kure Google Map"
"Yamato": the name of a battle ship build in Kure during the war era.  Click here for Yamato Museum in Kure City, our recommended tourist attraction.  Check out our "Kure Google Map"
"Sogo", the largest department store in Kure, adjacent to JR Kure Station.  Check out our "Kure Google Map"
